Tony Echavidre

At the age of 15, his curiosity led him to discover what would become his professional calling. His desire to express creativity through a material as lively and noble as wood, shaping it to create resonant objects, fascinated him.

During a visit to a luthier's workshop, he was immediately captivated by a world rich in history, culture, and technical expertise.

After studying Applied Arts and Cabinetmaking, he joined the Newark School of Violin Making in England, where he undertook a four-year program that confirmed his burgeoning passion.

Freshly graduated in 2002, he was invited to join Mathijs Heyligers’ workshop in Cremona, Italy, where he focused on the making and restoration of string quartet instruments.

Returning to France, he set up his own workshop in 2005 and, in the same year, was awarded the SEMA departmental prize for artistic crafts as well as a grant from the Marcel Vatelot Foundation.

In 2009, he opened his workshop in the historic center of Bordeaux, dedicating himself exclusively to the crafting and fine-tuning of violins, violas, and cellos.

His work is enriched by collaborative projects, which are valuable both technically and personally. He also participates in trade fairs, competitions, and conferences, which enhance his knowledge and allow him to better serve musicians.

For over 10 years, he has been conducting extensive research on violin-making varnishes, a subject he now shares through advanced training programs for both amateur and professional luthiers.

Tony Echavidre was honored with a special mention by Raphaël Pidoux for a baroque cello during the "Violoncelle en Seine" festival in 2012.
